ENTRY: $12.04/per hour

The City of Clearwater has a need for temporary seasonal employees to supplement our permanent workforce. A seasonal job is a short-term position designed to fill a temporary need, usually related to a specific time of year. These seasonal employees are invaluable in meeting the mission of the agency.

Unskilled and semi-skilled manual work of ordinary difficulty and responsibility in performing light to heavy physical labor and assisting in the performance of the general maintenance and upkeep of parks, landscape, grounds, and recreation facilities.

Employees in this class assume the status of an apprentice. Work is performed under direct supervision with basic and varied assignments being provided with an end to increasing skills to qualify for advancement to a higher job classification and is subject to review by inspection of grounds and effective completion of assignments. An employee hired in this classification serves from a minimum of six (6) months up to a maximum of twenty-four (24) months in the Parks and Recreation Department's Parks Service Technician I apprentice program, and upon demonstrating satisfactory work performance becomes eligible to be promoted to the Parks Service Technician II level.

Duties and Responsibilities

Cleans and maintains grounds, play areas, park properties and facilities, irrigation systems, landscaping, and athletic fields. Performs maintenance activities such as mowing, trimming, weeding, and assisting with irrigation servicing, chemical spray and granular applications of pesticides and fertilizers. Performs manual and minor maintenance in relation to grounds, facility and park amenities. May incidentally perform miscellaneous tasks of a gardener, caretaker, park maintenance worker, and janitor. Performs tasks involving the use of hand tools, power tools and equipment, and the operation of City vehicles such as pick up trucks and small dump trucks. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Must have minimum Tenth Grade Education AND one (1) year of experience as a semi-skilled laborer in the care and maintenance of parks, landscape, athletic fields, or other similar grounds; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Supplemental Information

General knowledge of proper landscape and grounds maintenance procedures.
General knowledge of hand and power tools and equipment used in park, landscape, athletic field, irrigation, chemical spray, and construction activities.
Ability to operate hand and power tools, small trucks, other automotive equipment, and riding mowers.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Physical strength and manual dexterity necessary to perform essential job duties.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and other City employees.
Ability to deal with customers in a courteous, efficient, and tactful manner.
May be called upon to perform after-hour responses due to emergency situations; or be required to work other shifts depending on schedule.

Possession and maintenance of a valid Florida Class E License, or higher Commercial Driver's License, or the ability to acquire such within the first six (6) months of employment, based on area of assignment.
