Position Description

Entry Salary - $34,115.38 OPEN UNTIL FILLED

Under direct supervision, the Survey Assistant performs entry level, semi-skilled technical land-based and marine survey work of routine difficulty and responsibility.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serves and acts as an entry level survey aide on a field survey party; assists, supports, and facilitates the success of various survey situations and provides help to Assistants and Crew Leader.
  • Performs extensive work in the uses if a prism pole, level rod, engineer's chain, electronic pipe locator, probe, and other common survey and hand tools; follows protocols and policies while maintaining safety and professional accuracy.
  • Positions and places prism pole and level rod sights for total station and level readings; posts traffic safety signs and traffic cones and ensures that the surrounding area is safe and secure for accurate recording of survey stats.
  • Drives and marks survey stakes; searches, probes, and digs for public and private survey monuments, underground utilities, obstacles, and other objects; removes brush and undergrowth from line of sight.
  • Maintains and accounts for tools and equipment to ensure an adequate supply of stakes, tapes, traffic cones, laths, and other devices at all times.
  • Receives instruction and training in the appropriate use of, and may occasionally operate, electronic survey instruments.
  • Assists and participates in a wide range of construction inspections; takes simple notes and transcriptions and makes minor visual sketches in accordance with a prescribed format.
  • Operates survey motor vehicle as required; operates vehicle following all protocols and policies.
  • Attends and participates in training sessions and educational meetings.
  • Performs related tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
A valid State driver's license is required.

This position is required to operate the below equipment, machines, tools, and other work aides:
Standard office equipment (PC, fax, copier, calculator, etc.). Prism and range poles, linker and level rods, telescopic level and tripod, various measuring tapes, measuring wheel, survey chain, plumb bob, ground probe, metal detector, machete, sledge hammer, manhole hook, shovel, chisel, various saws, weed whacker, bench grinder, and portable drill.

Education and Experience:
High School graduation, High School Equivalency Diploma, or G.E.D. Certificate. Some previous surveying experience is desirable; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge of -

  • Mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Field survey procedures and use of equipment within a reasonable training period.
  • Surveying and construction methods and practices.
  • Department policies and protocols.

Skill in -
  • Understanding and following oral instructions quickly and accurately.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Dealing tactfully with the public.
