Summary

The UT Southwestern (UTSW) Medical Center Pharmacy Intern Position and duties are designed to develop knowledge, proficiency and competency level for interns to become integral members of the health care team while maintaining and promoting their educational and professional growth in pharmacy practice. Interns will work with licensed pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to perform delivery of pharmacy services in cross functional areas of the department including, but not limited to: Acute Care, Cancer Center, Specialty, Ambulatory, and Transitions of Care pharmacies and pharmacy programs, to provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care to the patients of UTSW. The intern position will typically consist of students in their second, third, and fourth years of an ACPE accredited college of pharmacy. Pharmacy Interns will be trained to independently perform operational pharmacy technician responsibilities, and as the intern progresses through the program, may be trained to perform clinical and operational pharmacist responsibilities with pharmacist oversight. Interns will complete presentations, journal clubs, and/or longitudinal projects that will add value to the department. The interns should gain the knowledge, skills and real world experience that will assist them to achieve a residency, ambulatory, or clinical pharmacist position, should they wish to pursue. Pharmacy interns will be expected to work a minimum of 2 shifts (16 hours) per month while pharmacy school classes are in session. In the months when classes are not in session, the intern will be expected to work an average of 40 hours per month during the P2 and P3 years. The required hours will decrease to an average of 16 hours per month during the P4 year to accommodate educational requirements.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • IV sterile compounding, preparation, inventory management.
  • Maintaining IV certification (if applicable)
  • Distribution of verified medications
  • Work under the supervision of the licensed pharmacist (preceptor)
  • Availability to cover the infusion shift hours.
  • Responding to the phone calls as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must currently be enrolled and in good academic standing with the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Program at an ACPE accredited school or college of pharmacy.
  • Active registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacist Intern is required Basic Life Support (BLS) certification with course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required by start date.
  • Sterile compounding (IV) certification accredited by ACPE is preferred at third year of pharmacy school.
  • Previous pharmacy or hospital experience is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate in English (speaking, reading, writing) is required.

Job Duties

  • Perform job responsibilities in accordance with organizational and departmental policies, procedures, performance improvement objectives and environmental/infection control standards as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Perform daily pharmacy operational duties, medication distribution activities consistent with those of a pharmacy technician.
  • Perform extemporaneous compounding.
  • Accurately repackage bulk medications into unit dose per departmental policy and procedure.
  • Enters charges and credit and restock returns.
  • Fill all orders, floor stock, and fill lists.
  • Performs IV calculations and prepare all IV admixtures, batch preparation using proper aseptic technique and departmental policy.
  • Deliver medication on time.
  • Under the supervision of a pharmacist, communicate information (verbally/in writing) to physicians, nurses, etc. in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Assist in patient/family education and counseling regarding drug therapy, admission medication history, and side effects.
  • Also, effectively document clinical activities and concisely conveying key information required for follow-up by pharmacists.
  • Strive to improve patient satisfaction, as measured by Press Ganey scores.
  • Participate in the education of pharmacy staff, students, interns, and residents.
  • Provide both journal club and case presentations on an annual basis.
  • Support and demonstrate a customer services commitment to internal and external customers through adherence to UT Southwestern Medical Center's customer service standards and processes.
  • Under the supervision of a pharmacist, perform therapeutic monitoring of specified drug therapies & recommend dosage adjustments as needed based on renal function evaluation & pharmacokinetic calculations.
  • Participate in a longitudinal quality improvement or research initiative with the ultimate goal of presenting the findings at a regional or national conference.
  • Administer vaccinations when applicable and as assigned Perform other duties as assigned.

Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents in lieu of stated minimum require prior approval of Vice President for Human Resources Administration or his/her designee.
